Day 6: Hubbard Glacier – Scenic Cruising

To see the glaciers are something you could never tire of. That first glimpse of the pale blue glow with moraine streaks running through. The shapes, the lines of frozen flow, white but not white, the glittering sparkle of sunlight as it glistens on the ice, highlighting the shadows of crevices. The sea reflects these images and absorbs the colors from the glaciers mixing these with the sun and sky – blues, greens and purples. Such a breathtaking sight!

The Hubbard Glacier, nicknamed the “Galloping Glacier,” this east Alaskan Glacier is rapidly advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska into a pristine area known as Disenchantment Bay. The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier measures 76 miles long and plunges 1,200 feet into the depths of the bay. Its immense beauty and phenomenal blue hues are enchanting, even from afar. But it’s when our cruise ship draws closer that its towering surface really impresses, dwarfing even the uppermost deck on your ship at a whopping 40 stories high. There, with the snowcapped mountains serving as a glorious backdrop, you’ll have a prime viewing spot from which to witness the glacier calving, as it often expels icebergs the size of a 10-story buildings – imagine the splash!

When it comes to the best viewing opportunities in Alaska, Glacier Bay National Park frequently ranks among the best for its natural scenery, wildlife spotting, and the unique learning opportunities available to travelers visiting on a cruise ship. One of the unique, enriching features of experiencing Glacier Bay National Park on an Alaska cruise is that you’re able to learn directly from the park rangers. At the beginning of a Glacier Bay cruise, the park rangers board the ship in order to provide background information on the natural scenery, wildlife, and conservation efforts going on within the park. So, in addition to viewing some of the world’s best scenery, you receive personal information from the people who work hard to protect this natural wonder each and every day.
